"Easy there Jay. Steady." Melissa murmured softly, hands working in hope that the big chestnut colt would calm down somewhat. Throwing his head up the two year old pranced and swished his tail. Eyes rolling and teeth grating over the bit Jay ducked his head and bunny-hopped forward a few strides. Already foam covered his muzzle area and he hadn't even started his work yet.
Closing Time, the black High Times filly waited patiently in the starting gate with Jade abroad to be worked with FS Mockingbird. The black filly had experience where the chestnut colt lacked it yet she had speed and would put up a good work for Jay to learn from.
The wind blew across the track scattering dirt particles and Jay shied rolling his eyes again but his rider's soft words were getting through to the nervous acting colt. "Come on now Jj, let's not keep Clover waiting bud." Melissa said soothingly before gentling urging the chestnut toward the gates with her heels. Shaking his mane the strong-willed yet uncertain colt ambled into the gates with his ears pricked forward. The back gates slammed shut and Jay snorted, flicking one ear back. "Steady, steady." Melissa said as she wrapped her hands in Jay's mane and flipped her goggles down before quickly nodding. The gates sprang open and Closing Time burst forward leaving Jay at the gates.
With a furious jump forward at the tap of Melissa's heel Jay streaked after the black four year old who was in front and on the rail right where Clover liked to be.
Her hands firmly wrapped in the racing colt's mane Melissa could hardle see through the wind that was whipping her Thoroughbred's mane back in her face. For the first time in many months of working with Jay she felt a strong connection between them that raced with the wind and letting her hands slide up Jay's neck she clucked and with a snort he pushed forward head parallel to the ground and chestnut coat gleaming. Just then the sun burst from behind a cloud where it had been hidden and it picked out the Thoroughbred colt who was running with a freedom he'd been trying to find.
Flying past Clover like she was standing still Melissa let Jay run with unrestrained passion. In that single moment two souls connected and became one. No more would there be dumpings of his rider or acting nervous around the starting gate Melissa had forged a unbreakable bond, the bond that could rival her and Prince's. It would also be the strength that would help Jay overcome his doubts and know that she believed in him.
Slowing Jay back down to a trot and then a walk she cooled out the colt while waiting for Clover and Jade. Jade came up with an stunned expression. "What the hell happened to him? He came flying by us like it was nothing." she said, eyes resting on the colt who held his head high and an bright gleam in his brown eyes. "He did because he wanted to." she replied simply firmly and lovingly patting Jay Jay's sweaty neck.
