The chestnut colt tossed his head before kicking out at the back walls of his stall. "Easy Jay, settle down." I called softly to the handsome colt as I rested my weight against the stall door. Pricking his ears forward the two year old son of Oddside walked forward and nudged my hands, searching for treats.
"How are ya bud?" I asked gently running one finger down his stripe as Jay took on the peppermint I had produced from my pocket. His head bobbed slightly as he crunched on the peppermint. He had been lightly raced the past several months but Jay's training was steadily being increased, his gallops were getting longer and several times over the last two weeks he'd taken long jogs over the trails.
He was still solidly my boy though as he still wasn't bombproof and needed someone who was with him every step of the way. I had closely monitored every step he made, every meal, everything everything that dealt with FS Mockingbird. Some called me obsessive over the chestnut colt but it was slowly paying off as Jay had been victorious in two out of his last five starts which was pretty impressive and a light record for a colt who'd be training/racing since late May, early June.
"Ready to show your stuff?" I asked the colt softly as the sound of him striking the stall door with one hoof was heard throughout the busy training and racing barn. "That's good, you'll be out there in no time Jay." I continued gently rubbing one hand over his nose. Blowing out softly Jay flicked back one ear before ambling over to his water bucket once he saw I had no more treats.
